How to Choose the Right Tile for Your Bathroom

Tile is one of the most important decisions in any bathroom remodel. It sets the tone for the entire space and needs to perform well in a wet, high-traffic environment. Here’s what you need to know.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain is the most popular choice for bathrooms, and for good reason. It’s extremely durable, water-resistant, and available in an endless variety of colors, patterns, and finishes — including styles that mimic natural stone and wood.

Best for: Floors, shower walls, shower floors

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is similar to porcelain but slightly less dense, making it easier to cut and install. It’s a budget-friendly option that still offers great style and durability for bathroom walls.

Best for: Walls, backsplashes, accent areas

Natural Stone

Marble, travertine, and slate bring unmatched elegance to any bathroom. However, natural stone requires more maintenance — it needs to be sealed regularly to prevent staining and water damage.

Best for: Feature walls, vanity tops, luxury bathrooms

Large-Format Tiles

Tiles measuring 24″x24″ or larger are trending in 2025. Fewer grout lines mean a cleaner, more seamless look and easier maintenance. They work beautifully on both floors and walls.

Best for: Modern bathrooms, minimalist designs

Mosaic & Accent Tiles

Small mosaic tiles (1″x1″ or 2″x2″) are perfect for shower floors because they conform to the slope of the drain. They also make stunning accent strips and niches.

Best for: Shower floors, accent niches, decorative borders

Key Considerations

Slip resistance: Always choose textured or matte-finish tiles for floors, especially in showers. Look for tiles with a COF (coefficient of friction) rating of 0.42 or higher.Maintenance: Lighter grout shows dirt more easily. Consider darker grout or epoxy grout for easier maintenance.Budget: Tile costs range from $2/sq ft for basic ceramic to $15+/sq ft for premium natural stone. Installation typically adds $5–$15/sq ft.
