Tub to Shower Conversions

The most common request we get, and the highest-value square footage in most homes: a 60-inch tub that gets used twice a year, turned into a shower that gets used twice a day — usually without touching the rest of the room.

Scope

What the conversion includes

  • Tub and surround removal, including cast-iron cut-out where needed
  • Inspection of the framing, subfloor and drain line the tub was hiding
  • Drain conversion from tub trap to shower drain, tied into existing waste
  • New sloped pan and bonded waterproofing across the full alcove
  • Valve replacement to a pressure-balanced or thermostatic shower valve
  • Wall tile to ceiling, niche, and optional bench within the alcove
  • Curb, low-threshold or curbless entry depending on joist direction
  • Glass panel or door, templated after tile, plus trim and final seal
Our approach

What's different about a conversion

This scope is defined by one unknown: what's behind the tub. Old alcoves hide rotted subfloor at the apron, corroded galvanized supply, and undersized framing. We build a contingency conversation into day one rather than pretending demo won't find anything.

  1. 1Verify joist direction and drain location to confirm curbless is or isn't possible
  2. 2Remove the tub and surround, then inspect and repair framing and subfloor
  3. 3Convert the drain and set the new valve, permitted if the line moves
  4. 4Pan, membrane, flood test, then wall and niche tile
  5. 5Glass template and install, seal, and final walk-through
Why STRYDE

Why homeowners make the swap

The footprint already works

A standard alcove is 60 by 30 inches — that's a generous shower. Because the water supply, drain and framing are already there, this is the cheapest path to a custom shower in almost every house we look at.

Stepping over a 15-inch wall gets old

This request comes up constantly around a knee replacement, a new hip, or simply the year someone decides they're done climbing into a tub. A conversion solves that now without committing to a full accessibility remodel.

It's a contained project

The work stays inside the wet wall. Your vanity, floor and toilet stay put, dust stays behind a zip wall, and the budget stays proportional to the one thing you actually wanted changed.
Questions

FAQs about this service

Will removing my only tub hurt resale value?

In a one-bathroom home, keeping a tub is worth protecting — families with young children screen for it. If you have a second full bath with a tub, Triad agents we work with consistently report the opposite: a well-built walk-in shower in the primary bath shows better than a builder-grade tub nobody uses.

How long is the bathroom out of use?

A conversion inside the existing alcove typically runs seven to ten working days, with a pause in the middle for tile cure. Widening the opening or moving the drain adds a few days and, in most cases, a plumbing inspection.

Can you do it without retiling the whole room?

Often, yes. If the existing floor tile is sound and we're staying in the same footprint, we can rebuild the wet area and blend at the curb line. Where the old tub apron leaves a visible gap in the floor field, we'll show you the options — a threshold detail or a full floor replacement — before we commit.

Bold design. Flawless craftsmanship. Built to last.
