Process note: pitch and downspout placement
A gutter hung level looks fine but doesn't drain — every run needs a slight pitch toward the downspout, roughly a quarter inch of drop per ten feet, or water sits and overflows at the low point. We also place downspouts based on roof valleys and water volume, not just even spacing along the fascia.

How do I know if my gutters need replacing versus cleaning?
If water is overflowing during heavy rain but the gutters themselves are straight and free of rust or separation at the seams, cleaning or adding guards usually solves it. If you're seeing sagging sections, pulled fasteners, visible rust-through, or standing water that never drains, the gutters or their pitch have failed and replacement is the right call.
Are gutter guards actually worth it?
In the Piedmont and Triangle, where oak and pine debris is heavy seasonally, guards meaningfully cut down on how often gutters need cleaning and reduce the risk of ice-related overflow in winter. They don't eliminate maintenance entirely — fine debris and pollen can still build up — but they stop the large clogs that cause overflow and fascia rot.
What size gutters and downspouts do I need?
Most residential roofs run fine on standard 5-inch K-style gutters, but larger roof areas, steep pitches, or homes with a history of overflow often need 6-inch gutters and additional downspouts to move water fast enough. We calculate roof square footage and typical rainfall intensity for your area before recommending a size.
Can bad gutters actually damage my foundation?
Yes, and it's one of the more expensive mistakes we see. Gutters that overflow or discharge water right against the foundation saturate the soil next to your footings, which over time contributes to settling, cracking, and basement or crawlspace moisture. Correct gutter sizing, downspout placement, and extensions that carry water several feet away from the house are cheap insurance against a much bigger repair.
